Family Talk Time
Talking regularly with your young child is one of the most powerful ways to support their language development. Every simple conversation—whether it’s naming objects during play or describing what you’re doing—helps build vocabulary, strengthens listening skills, and lays the foundation for reading and writing. The more words children hear and engage with early on, the more connections their brain forms, boosting both communication and cognitive growth. It’s not just about talking to them, but talking with them—those back-and-forth exchanges spark curiosity, confidence, and a love for learning that can last a lifetime.
In our often busy schedules we can find creative ways to have those conversations and make the interactions fun and memorable. The link below has a short and simple activity to have family engagement and encourage development in different areas.
You can print it and cut out the cards. Shuffle them and let each family member pick one card and ask the question. For a bonus, write down each family member’s answers and post it in your home. You could re-read the answers and talk about them throughout the week and even draw pictures to go with the answers too.

Think about all the developmental covered from this fun and simple activity:
Cognitive - Answering the questions.
Social/Emotional - Learning about other’s thoughts and ideas and taking turns to answer.
Language/Literacy - Speaking and listening, learning how to engage in conversations and building vocabulary. If you write down each family member’s answer, you will see the connection between the spoken and written words.
Fine and Gross Motor - Let your child use their fine motor skills to draw a picture about their answers. Remember to have them tell you about their picture.
